Estimated PVC consumption increased 12% in Russia

February 13/2009
Estimated PVC consumption in Russia in 2008 increased 12%, compared to 2007, and moved at 965.9 kt, according to Market Report Company. If it were not the growing market over the course of the first six months of the year, consumption would have been much lower (over the course of the last five months of the year, estimated consumption dropped by 13%, compared to the same period in 2007). Domestic consumption went down by 1%, down to 578.2 kt.

Underproduction, particularly in the first half of 2008, was covered by increasing PVC imports (at the year-end, imports increased 39%). In 2008, estimated PVC-S consumption
increased 14%, compared to 2007, and moved at 860.1 kt. According to the results of the year, supply of Asian suspension went up to an unprecedented level of 245.7 kt; the share of the top five companies (Xinjiang Tianye, Xinjiang Zhongtai, LG, Formosa and Hanwha Corporation) in overall PVC-S imports was at about 88%. In view of high prices, overall imports of European suspension went up only by 10 kt, to 64.3 kt (Ineos ChlorVinyls, BorsodChem, Oltchim, Anwil, etc.).

Estimated emulsion consumption went up only by 4%, and moved at 105.8 kt. Nearly all PVC-E imports belonged to five producers: Vinnolit, Solvin, Ineos ChlorVinyls, Vestolit and Total Petrochemicals.
