China: Plans for globally competitive auto market by 2011
April 13/2009
The Chinese government plans to restructure the country´s automotive
industry in an effort to enhance its international competitiveness.
Beijing aims to have in place two or three large manufacturers, each
producing some 2m vehicles annually, by the end of 2011. In addition,
it foresees construction of four or five plants producing some 1m
vehicles a year.
One idea currently being weighed is to merge several big manufacturers. Successful implementation of the initiative would reduce the number of firms sharing the market to 10.
