Solvay: Vinyls expansion completed in Brazil

Solvay Indupa (So Paulo / Brazil; has completed a USD 150m expansion and upgrade of its vinyls production in Santo Andr, Brazil following the start-up of a new membrane chlor-alkali unit. The three-year expansion project, which included merging the membrane chlor-alkali and VCM units into one integrated facility, has raised VCM and PVC production capacity to 300,000 t/y.

The chlor-alkali plant replaces an old mercury-based facility, allowing a 30% cut in electricity consumption, said parent group Solvay (Brussels / Belgium; Caustic soda capacity has been increased to 170,000 t/y.
