Tri Polyta's PP plant expansion delayed to April 2011

(plastemart) -- Indonesia's Tri Polyta's polypropylene plant, that has been shut for debottlenecking since March 2010, will see a delay in restart. Restart will be delayed by three months to April 2011, mainly on concerns on global economic recovery. The debottlenecking program will boost the plant's PP capacity -- across three production lines at Cilegon, Banten in west Java from 360,000 tpa to 480,000 tpa.

Arkema awarded Pierre Potier prize for innovations

(Arkema) -- Launched in 2005 by Union des Industries Chimiques (UIC - French Chemical Industries Association) and Federation Francaise des sciences pour la Chimie (FFC - French Federation for Chemical Sciences) under the aegis of the French Ministry for Industry, the Pierre Potier prize rewards companies that bring out innovations in the field of sustainable development. This year, Arkema has won top prize with Kynar Aquatec, a resin available for the first time as an aqueous formulation for the manufacture of roofs that reflect sunlight, therefore help reduce air-conditioning costs and achieve major energy savings.

The objective of the research teams was to develop a technology to apply coatings by spraying directly onto existing buildings. The Kynar Aquatec innovation consists in developing a latex paint as an aqueous emulsion, capable of forming a film at ambient temperature through a new process combining polymerization and acrylic polymerization. This innovation features the ease of application of a solvent-free aqueous paint, combined with the outstanding durability and reflectivity of Kynar coatings. Being able to apply a paint like a traditional acrylic paint (i.e. without any heat treatment) therefore helps extend the use of the Kynar coating to the construction or renovation of all types of buildings, whatever the shape and nature of roof and siding: metal, cement, asphalt sheeting or even wood.

Welsh officials to promote plastics recycling

(prw) -- Local authorities across Wales will find it easier to make money from recycling and avoid their share of a seven figure landfill tax bill thanks to new Welsh Assembly funding.

A grant will give councils the opportunity to develop the facilities they need to be able to harvest' valuable materials from rubbish and sell them on to generate revenue. A second grant will go towards developing a new plastics recycling facility, which will result in a landfill tax saving of up to GBP 3.8m per year, according to the Assembly.

The GBP 1m committed to the creation of a plastics recycling facility will help build a plant that will be able to process a wide range of products such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and other food containers.

German chemical industry shows growth signs

(prw) -- The German chemical industry association, the VCI, has reported that its country's members increased sales by 5.2%, quarter on quarter. Revenue rose to ┬41.6bn in the three months to June.

According to the association's data, production was up 1.5%, while capacity usage rose by 2.8% to 85.6%, principally as a result of increased demand amongst the sector's industrial customers, both in Germany and more widely.

The VCI expects full-year figures to show an 11% rise in production and an 18% jump in revenue, although market conditions will quieten down a little after the rush to restock to meet returning end-user demand, it predicted.
