Engel introduces new e-motion moulding machine for food containers

MOSCOW (MRC) -- Engel, the largest producer of injection moulding machinery worldwide and a leader in the field of injection moulding technology, has introduced a new high-precision, all-electric e-motion injection moulding machine for food containers production with an integrated barrier layer.

ENGEL has succeeded in combining barrier technology with thin-wall injection moulding thanks to co-injection of polypropylene (PP) and EVOH. ENGEL provides maximum productivity with low energy consumption, while at the same time ensuring that the EVOH barrier layer of just 0.05 mm thickness is reliably implemented right to the edges.

As MRC informed earlier, Engel has invested 2.3 m euros in its facility in Dietach, Austria in order to introduce synchronised line assembly and modernise the machine farm in its robot plant, according to plastech. The latest investment in Dietach sees the third Austrian production facility follow suit. Beside, ENGEL is opening its fourth subsidiary for the German market near Stuttgart in January in line with the company's strategy to increase its maket share.

Sonoco expands its thermoforming unit

(Sonoco) -- Sonoco, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, has completed expansion at its Waynesville, N.C., thermoforming location, where it will start up a new multilayer, trim-in-place line.

According to Rodger Fuller, vice president of Rigid Plastics, Sonoco's new line is being installed now and will be ready for full production in December. This new machine will enable the production of a wide variety of containers with the added capability of complex shapes for chilled foods, as well as thermally processed shelf stable food products.

"This investment in large-scale multilayer polypropylene (PP) production complements our existing capabilities for processed food packaging, which include crystallized polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) and polypropylene frozen food trays; portion control cups; and blow molded bottles for retorted and aseptically processed beverages," said Fuller.

Sonoco Plastics is a leading manufacturer of monolayer and multilayer blow-molded bottles and jars, thermoformed cups and trays and engineered molded and extruded containers, spools and trays, with 25 plastics operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany.

Arkema presents new resin technology for water pipe system

(plastics infomart) -- Arkema has developed and introduced a new resin technology for bonding Kynar polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to polyolefin resins in portable water piping.

Kynar PVDF can be extruded and bonded with Kynar ADX as a barrier layer to a polyolefin multilayer pipe system that is reliable and long lasting. This multilayer piping combines the benefits of polyolefin (high flexibility, therefore supplied in coils for easy installation) with those of PVDF resin: high chemical resistance, high purity, low biofilm formation, long service life and very low permeation (for safe transportation of water through contaminated land).

This product can withstand disinfectants such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, chloramines, sodium hypochlorite, hypochlorous acid, and other aggressive chemicals added to drinking water. 150km of this multilayer piping have already been installed by water companies in France to the full satisfaction of end-users and municipalities, according to Arkema.

We remind that earlier this year, Akrema announced its 2016 ambition to become a world leader in specialty chemicals and advanced materials. The acquisition of Hipro Polymers and Casda Biomaterials in China beginning of this year and the divestment of its Vinyl business beginning of July, were the last steps of the highly successful turnaround of Arkema into a strong player in specialty chemicals.

Clariant shows good perfomance in Q3 2012

MOSCOW (MRC) -- Clariant's financial indices are increasing, despite the unfavorable economic situation in Europe, according to a company's press release.

The company's Q3 2012 sales rose 3% to CHF1.923 billion from CHF1.865 billion in Q3 2011. Cash flow from operations reached CHF181m from CHF216m in Q3 2011. EBITDA before exceptionals fell 7% to CHF201m from CHF216m in Q3 2011 due to lower volumes of investment. However, as MRC informed earlier, the company intends to increase the production capacity of the dehydrogenation catalysts in the U.S. and has already made major investments in the project, which is scheduled to start up in September 2013. The company has also strengthened its position in the Asian market by entering into strategic agreements with DKSH and Wacker. The company also showed good progress in portfolio management and the integration of Sud-Chemie.
