Nizhnekamskneftekhim suspended HDPE production

MOSCOW (MRC) -- Nizhnekamskneftehim, the third largest high density polyethylene (HDPE) producer in Russia,
stopped its production, according to MRC analysts.

Today, on 27 June, Nizhnekamskneftekhim shut down its HDPE production. HDPE output was stopped because of problems at ethylene production unit. The plant's representatives have not disclosed the duration of the outage, but they do not rule out the possibility of resumption of polyethylene (PE) production in the next 4-5 days.

The annual PE capacity of the plant in Nizhnekamsk is 200,000 tonnes. According MRC ScanPlast, in 2012 the
overall output of PE by Nizhnekamsk plant totalled slightly more than 202,000 tonnes. Over the first five months of 2013, the company produced 84,000 tonnes of PE.

In January-May 2013 PET consumption in Russia rose by 3.5%

MOSCOW (MRC) -- In January-May 2013 the market capacity of PET in Russia increased by 3.5% compared to the same period in the previous year and amounted to 253,000 tonnes, according to MRC ScanPlast.

Stronger demand has been met by an increase in domestic production and imports (mainly from China and South Korea).
Over the reporting period, the domestic supply of Russian granulate increased by 8% to around 177,000 tonnes, despite an general decrease in the production of PET in Russia.

Thus, in January-May 2013, the supplies of Russian PET to the domestic market reached 70% in the totall supplies. Strengthening of the domestic demand this year and the unfavourable situation in the European markets contributed to the reduction export shipments of PET.

Thus, in January-May exports of Russian PET fell by 60% compared to January-May in the previous year and made about 12,000 tonnes.
The lack of Russian PET has been offset by an increase in foreign purchases.

Thus, in January-May 2013 imports of PET to Russia increased by 10% and amounted to 75,680 tonnes. If the current rate of consumption remains to the end of the year the capacity of Russian PET market will grow by 20,000 tonnes and can come close to the level of 602,000 tonnes.

May exports of titanium dioxide from Ukraine decreased by 11%

MOSCOW (MRC) - In May, the export shipments of Ukrainian titanium dioxide (TiO2) were cut by more than 11% compared to April to 11,215 tonnes, according to MRC DataScope.

As MRC analysts expected Ukraine's exports of TiO2 in May to be reduced due to the global decline in demand for the material. In addition, prices of Chinese TiO2 continue to decline, making the Ukrainian material less competitive in international markets.

Export supplies of "Crimean Titan" in May amounted to about 8,400 tonnes, slightly down from April.

SumyKhimprom reduced its shipments significantly. Thus, in May exports of the plant decreased by 30% to just more than 2,700 tonnes.

The most popular Ukrainian grade of titanium dioxide in export markets is Crimea TiOx-230 by production of "Crimean Titan".

In general, May exports of Ukraine's titanium dioxide to foreign markets totalled to 3,175 tonnes, up 100 tonnes from April. Over the five months of the current year Ukraine has shipped 57,200 tonnes of titanium dioxide, from 62,000 tonnes year on year.

EPS consumption in Ukraine decreased by 16%

MOSCOW (MRC) - Ukraine's domestic consumption of expandable polystyrene (EPS) over the five months decreased by 16% compared to the same period in 2012, according to MRC DataScope.

In early 2013, activity on the Ukrainian market of EPS has been weak. The market has recovered only in the second half of April. Although the long holidays in the first half of May, slowed down the activity of the market, which also affected the sales.

Thus, EPS imports to Ukraine in January-May 2013 totalled 7,880 tonnes, from 8,500 tonnes in the same period of 2012. If the Ukrainian production of EPS in January-May 2012 made 3,900 tonnes, over the same period this year, it dropped to 2,780 tonnes.

Exports shipments, in contrary, increased from 1,340 tonnes in 2012 to 1,420 tonnes in 2013. Thus, the domestic consumption in January-May 2013 amounted to 9,240 tonnes of EPS , from 11,060 tonnes during the same period in 2012.

The participants of Ukrainian EPS market confirm the decline in the market consumption over the first five months. The main reasons for the reduction of the market were the adverse weather conditions in March, and the weak sales of finished products made from EPS , mainly insulation materials.

HIPS and GPPS prices for July remain steady in Russia

MOSCOW (MRC) - Russian producers aim to keep the price for high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and general-purpose polystyrene (GPSS) for the July shipments at the June level, according to ICIS-MRC Price Report.

Since the beginning of 2013 the cost of polystyrene in the Russian market has been relatively stable. Under the pressure from the European and Asian quotations in April-May, the Russian producers were forced to reduce their offers on average by Rb2,000-2,500/tonne.

In June, the Russian PS prices remained stable, with slight variations in the regions. Market participants expect that in July Russian producers also keep the prices of HIPS and GPSS at rollover from June level.

Some representatives of the companies said that the market at the moment is balanced, the stock inventories of the material also do not exceed the average rate.

The quotations of polystyrene in foreign markets in July are not expected to be changed significantly. European market in June has demonstrated an uptrend of spot quotations of styrene-monomer (SM), which reached USD1,710-1,740/tonnes.

However, European SM prices returned in the range of USD1,680-1,700/tonne this week following lower benzene prices. Such a reduction can have a significant influence on the formation of the contract SM prices in July. The price of polystyrene either remain the same or increase by a maximum of EUR10-15/tonne.

Asian producers keep prices of HIPS and GPPS at the same level. Weak demand for the material in 2013 does not allow them to carry out the planned increase of price offers.
