(Plasticsnews) -- Commercial Plastics Recycling Inc. is expanding its Tampa, Fla., headquarters by nearly 20 percent, to 62,000 square feet, in part to house a large, new pipe shredder it just bought from Germany's Zerma Zerkleinerungsmaschinenbau GmbH.
The ZRS1500-model shredder can handle plastic pipe up to 48 inches in diameter, according to CPR President Ben Benvenuti. The shredder can accept lengths of pipe up to 25 feet long, which also makes for safer handling, since one doesn't need to be using chain saws and the like to chop up pipe into smaller pieces.
Once installed, CPR's Tampa plant will be one of the largest pipe-shredding facilities in the United States, and it will double the amount of PVC and polyethylene pipe that CPR processes.
The 14-year-old company, which also operates recycling facilities in Millwood, W.Va., and Newton, N.C., as well as a sales office in Little Falls, N.J., noted that demand for recycled plastics from pipe has been growing. Additionally, many suppliers of used pipe have been looking for ways to recycle rather than landfill the material.
