DSM introduces hot engineering plastics, LED and gas tank applications

MOSCOW (MRC) -- Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, has developed new high performance polyamides to be used in some of the latest application innovations and will introduce these new grades
at the Fakuma plastics processing exhibition being held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from October 14 to 18, reported the company in its press release.

Thus, DSM will unveil next generation of Diablo high temperature resistant grades in its Stanyl polyamide 46 and Akulon polyamide 6 portfolios. These new Diablo grades are aimed at applications in automotive engine compartments such as air intake manifold, ducts and charge air cooler combinations, where temperatures can reach as high as 250C.

DSM is also leading the way in high performance engineering plastics for the electrical and electronics sectors. It will demonstrate the use of Stanyl TC, a thermally conductive grade of Stanyl polyamide 46, in a heat sink for new LED downlights from one of the world’s leading lighting companies.

Also on the DSM stand will be thermoplastic composite gas tanks for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) that the company has developed with Covess, a specialist in advanced thermoplastic composite vessels for a wide range of applications. Together with hydrogen, natural gas is claiming its place in the field of cost-effective and low carbon footprint fuels for use in automobiles. Thermoplastic tanks weigh around 70% less than steel tanks, and they last longer than steel or even advanced thermoset gas tanks. They exhibit extremely low gas permeation levels, making them very safe, and they are fully recyclable. Besides thermoplastic tape, DSM provides solutions for liners in Type IV composite pressure vessels with its Akulon Fuel Lock polyamide portfolio. Most recently, a material is developed for large pressure vessels for heavy duty vehicles and gas transportation.

As MRC informed previously, in October 2013, Royal DSM signed a partnership agreement with long fibre thermoplastic (LFT) specialist Plasticomp (Winona, Minnesota / USA) to develop bio-based LFT composite materials based on DSM’s "EcoPaXX" polyamide 4.10.

Asian PC prices to increase in September in the Russian market

MOSCOW (MRC) - Asian producers of polycarbonate (PC) increased September prices on average by USD300/tonne on the rising cost of feedstock, according to ICIS-MRC Price Report.

This is especially felt in the blow moulding sector, which is totally dependent on supplies from Asia. Asian PC is not popular in the moulding and extrusion sectors. Producers in Japan and South Korea have begun to raise prices since the end of June.

June PC prices were in the range of USD2,450-2,650/tonne CFR Vostochny. In September PC prices reached USD2,750-2,800/tonne CFR Vostochny. In this regard, traders began to refrain from the procurement of feedstock from some producers, as for converters such PC price was unacceptable. The situation is exacerbated by the price fluctuation in the domestic market because of the devaluation of the national currency.

The trend of consistent price rise of the feedstock of PC is characteristic for Asia and Europe. So, spot prices for acetone rose on average by USD60/tonne in the last six months. Phenol prices rose USD200/tonne over the reported period. Bisphenol A prices increased by USD340/tonne over the reported period. Prices for injection moulding PC in Asian markets are now at USD2,520-2,720/tonne CFR China. Price for extrusion material are in the range USD2,450-2,520/tonne CFR China. Domestic prices of PC in Asia increased by USD120/tonne.

The most popular producers supplying PC in Russia for bottles blowing are Samyang (with share of 32%) and LG Chem (with 18% share). Both plants are geographically located in South Korea.
