Japan Aug ethylene output rises 3.6%

September 08/2009
TOKYO, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Japanese ethylene production rose 3.6 percent in August from a year ago, government data showed on Tuesday, as robust demand enabled makers of the petrochemical feedstock to keep their crackers at high rates.

Ethylene output totalled 628,200 tonnes last month, versus 606,100 tonnes last August, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

Output in July was 553,800 tonnes.

Strong plastics demand in China, Asia"s top petrochemical importer, has kept cracker runs high through much of North Asia.

Ethylene, made from naphtha, is a basic feedstock for petrochemicals that are processed into products such as plastics.

August saw two maintenance-related plant shutdowns in Japan, the same amount as last year.

The export volume of ethylene jumped 33.7 percent to 222,200 tonnes in July from a year earlier. The August export figures have not yet been released.
