MOSCOW (MRC) -- The overall imports of high density polyethylene (HDPE) totalled about 140,300 tonnes over the first nine months of 2015, down by 38% year on year. Film grade and pipe grade polyethylene (PE) accounted for the greatest fall in imports, according to MRC DataScope report.
September HDPE imports to Russia fell to 17,200 tonnes from 19,400 tonnes a month earlier. PE for extrusion coating of large diameter steel pipes accounted for the main reduction in supplies. The overall HDPE imports totalled 140,300 tonnes from January to September 2015 versus 224,700 tonnes a year earlier. Such a major decline in supplies was caused by a stable performance of Russian producers and weaker demand in certain consumption sectors. Pipe grade and film grade HDPE accounted for the most significant fall in imports.
The supply structure by consumption sectors looks the following way over the stated period.
September imports of HDPE for extrusion coating of large diameter steel pipes slumped to 1,200 tonnes from 5,300 tonnes a month earlier. The overall imports of this PE grade decreased to 39,900 tonnes over the first nine months of 2015, down by 9% year on year, partially because of the growth in domestic production.
The last month's imports of injection moulding HDPE were 4,100 tonnes versus 3,800 tonnes in August. Imports of injection moulding PE totalled 35,100 tonnes from January to September 2015, down by 3% year on year.
September imports of HDPE for pipe extrusion rose to 5,500 tonnes from 4,800 tonnes. The overall imports of pipe grade PE to Russia totalled 25,900 tonnes over the stated period versus 66,700 tonnes a year earlier. The key factors that affected imports negativerly were a major fall in demand for finished products in the domestic market (20%), high HDPE prices in foreign markets and a significant devaluation of the Russian rouble against the major world currencies.
The last month's imports of HDPE for extrusion blow moulding (EBM) grew to 2,500 tonnes from 2,200 tonnes in August. The overall imports of this PE grade to Russia totalled 19,300 tonnes over the said period versus 39,400 tonnes a year earlier.
September imports of film grade HDPE rose to 2,100 tonnes from 1,900 tonnes a month earlier. Imports of film grade HDPE slumped to 10,800 tonnes over the first nine months of the year from 28,700 tonnes a year earlier.
The overall HDPE imports to other consumption sectors, including for cable products extrusion, totalled 9,200 tonnes from January to September 2015 versus 10,000 tonnes in 2014.
