Demand for styrene polymers in Ukraine fell by 10%

November 05/2015

MOSCOW (MRC) - Demand for polystyrene and styrene plastics in Ukraine in the first three quarters declined by 10% compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 42,500 tonnes. The industry has declined in consumption for the fourth year in a row, according to MRC ScanPlast.

In the structure of consumption of polymers of styrene market the greatest decrease showed high impact polystyrene (HIPS) and general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) markets. Demand for HIPS and GPPS in the first three quarters of this year fell by 21% and amounted to slightly less than 16,000 tonnes.

The main supplier of HIPS and GPPS into Ukraine was Russian plant Nizhnekamskneftekhim. Share of Nizhnekamsk polystyrene in the consumption in the first three quarters of this year was 87%.

The prices of HIPS and GPPS in Ukraine in the second and third quarters were stable despite fluctuations in the hryvnya exchange rate and changes in the prices for polystyrene in foreign markets, according to MRC analysts.

The market of expandable polystyrene (EPS) in the first half of the year increased by 4% and totalled 23,300 tonnes. The largest supplier of EPS in Ukraine was Russian group SIBUR. EPS is the only market of styrene plastics, showing an increase in demand in the current year.
SIBUR"s share in import of EPS in Ukraine is 41%. The share of Chinese supplier Loyal was 30%.
Ukraine"s imports of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS)  decreased to 2,300 tonnes over the first nine months of the year, down 20% year on year.

It should be noted that the market completely depend on imports of all groups of styrene polymers. This year, the local producer of polystyrene Stirol (Gorlovka, Donetsk region) will not work.
