MOSCOW (MRC) - The capacity of the Russian market of PET chips decreased 547,000 tonnes in 2015, down 8% from the previous year, according to MRC Annual Survey "PET in Russia - 2016".
At the same time, consumption of bottle grade PET in Russia except imported recycled PET-flex and film PET chips fell to 530,000 tonnes in 2015. The demand for PET in 2015 resulted from the general economic situation in the country, as a consequence, reduction in preforms consumption in the main sectors. Production of beer has decreased again in 2015.
According to Rosstat, Russia's production of beer in 2015 was 782 m decalitre, down 5% year on year. Production of carbonated water (CDS) also has dropped in 2015. The production of CDS in 2015 in the country decreased by 1% to USD333 m decalitres.
At the same time, the growth in segment of drinking waters continued. At the present, this segment of the consumption of PET preforms is the largest. The production of drinking water in Russia amounted 4.695 bn of half litres in 2015, almost 4% higher than a year earlier.
Production of products in other sectors suitable for filling containers in PET also reduced. The output of juices in Russia increased by 30% in 2015. Despite the overall decrease in consumption of PET in Russia in 2015, the production of Russian PET chips on the contrary increased.
Russian market continued to prefer domestic PET to imported material.
Converters have switched to Russian feedstock because of the unpredictability of exchange rates and the cost of imported material, which is more expensive than more Russian material. Imports of bottle grade PET chips into Russia fell by 55% and amounted to 82,200 tonnes in 2015.
At the same time, Russia's production of PET dropped to 493,000 tonnes in 2015, up 13% year on year. Senege, based in Solnechnogorsk, did not change PET output in 2015 compared with its production in 2014. Polief and SIBUR-PET increased PET production by 8% each in 2015.
The greatest increase in the production showed Alco-Naphtha, based in Kaliningrad. The company raised its capacity utilisation, having increased PET chips production by 40,000 tonnes (up 55% from 2014).
