Last month, Russian companies reduced their PP imports, despite quite low prices in foreign markets and a significant strengthening of the rouble against the dollar. January imports reached 9,500 tonnes, compared to 11,000 tonnes in January 2016 and 12,400 tonnes in December 2016. Overall, Russia imported 167,200 tonnes last year.
The structure of PP imports by grades looked the following way over the stated period.
January shipments of homopolymer PP decreased to 2,600 tonnes from 5,200 tonnes and 4,100 tonnes in January and December 2016, respectively. Local companies significantly reduced their shipments of homopolymer PP raffia. Last year's overall imports of this PP grade exceeded 72,500 tonnes.
Last month's imports of block copolymers of propylene (PP block copolymers) were 2,700 tonnes, compared to 2,500 tonnes in January 2016 and 2,000 tonnes in December 2016. Local companies increased their purchasing of PP block copolymer for injection moulding and compounding. Imports of PP block copolymer to Russia reached 30,800 tonnes during the entire year of 2016.
January imports of statistical copolymers of propylene (PP random copolymers) were slightly less than 2,000 tonnes, compared to 1,700 tonnes in January 2016 and 3,700 tonnes in December 2016. Weak seasonal demand for finished products forced local converters to limit their purchasing of PP random copolymers in foreign markets, despite rather low prices. Overall imports of this PP grade totalled 34,800 tonnes in 2016.
Imports of other propylene polymers were 2,300 tonnes over the stated period, compared to 1,700 tonnes a year earlier.
