Consumption of caustic soda down 22% in Russia

September 16/2009
MOSCOW (MRC) -- Over the course of January-July, consumption of caustic soda went down by 22% compared to the same period last year – according to MRC’s analysts.

Weak buying activity in the domestic market was the reason of cutting down caustic soda output in Russia (by 16%).

This year, liquid caustic soda exports have increased 8%, and moved at 150.24 kt. Kazakhstan still remains the most priority export market. Feedstock shipments to that country went up by 46%. Exports of rigid caustic soda rose by 49%. There was a serious increase in exports of material produced by Caustic, Volgograd, (by 64%).

Prices for imported caustic soda in the domestic market are still lower than those to Russian material, which keeps on facilitating imports. In July, imports went up by more than 2.5 times, compared to June.
