Ineos Nova closes Dutch PS plant

September 17/2009

September, 17 (packagingnews.co.uk) -- Ineos Nova is closing a Dutch polystyrene (PS) facility with the loss of 50 jobs in a bid to make the PS division more profitable.
The Breda plant, which produces some 90 kta of PS, will close by the end of the year as part of Ineos plan to improve the long-term sustainability of the PS business.

Ineos Nova chief executive Martin Pugh said the firm has "significant overcapacity" in its European PS business and the closure would help increase the efficiency at other plants and reduce costs.

"Overcapacity, combined with feedstock volatility and weak demand, has depressed margins and made our PS business unprofitable," he said.

Ineos has started consultations with the Breda works council and trade unions. "We recognise the impact of such a decision and will work hard to make this transition as smooth as possible for our employees and the community," said Pugh.

The plant closure will not affect the manufacture of expanded polystyrene (EPS) or high performance polystyrene (HPS) at the Breda site, Ineos said, although there will be some reorganisation of the HPS portfolio.
