Total to restart Carling cracker following explosion

October 07/2009
October, 7 (plasteurope.com) -- Total Petrochemicals has begun the process of restarting its steam cracker at Carling-Saint Avold in eastern France, which has been shut since the explosion on 15 July 2009 that killed two workers and injured six others.

The company said the cracker will be operating at full capacity in mid-December with only the undamaged unit of the two at the site in operation. The second unit is expected to be brought back into service in April 2010 when the facility will return to normal operations. The plant produces 170,000 t/y of PE and 180,000 t/y of PS from naphtha.
