BASF and Mitsubishi pursue succinic acid route

October, 8 ( -- BASF Future Business (Ludwigshafen/Germany) is partnering with leading lactic acid and bio-based polyols producer CSM (Diemen/The Netherlands) on the industrial fermentation and downstream processing of bio-based succinic acid. Commercial production is due to start in the second quarter of 2010, with the greenhouse gas CO2 used as a raw material. 

Japans Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Thailands PTT Public Company Ltd also have announced plans to conduct a feasibility study on the development of biopolybutylene succinate. MCC currently produces the degradable polymer from petrochemical feedstock.
