HDPE imports down 15% in Ukraine

October 26/2009
MOSCOW (MRC) -- Over the course of January-September, imports of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) went down by 15% (to 98.20 kt), as compared with the same period last year Ц according to MRC. Pipe-grade HDPE imports shrank more than two times.

Ukrainian companies preferred less expensive Russian pipe-grade feedstock. The share of Russian HDPE moved at 39% of overall imports (69% in September).

High prices for pipe-grade HDPE in Asia and limited financial resources of Ukrainian pipe producers resulted in a serious decrease in imports in the Ukrainian market in September. Furthermore, imports of Korean PE100 moved to all-time low ever recorded over the course of the two recent years (100 mt).
September turned out to be a difficult month for the Ukrainian HDPE market. Particularly, as compared with August, slumping demand was observed in the sectors of film (by 31%) and injection moulding (by 47%) feedstock. Ukrainian companies did not import film-grade HDPE from Uzbekistan.
