November 02 (plasteurope.com) -- Business is stabilising at a relatively low level, BASF
(Ludwigshafen / Germany) said in its report on Q3. EBIT before special
items, although up 9% against Q2, was down 20% against the 2008 period.
Group sales, at EUR 12.8 bn, were 19% lower year-on-year.
Thanks to cost-cutting, EBIT of the Plastics segment was down only 9%
to EUR 216m, despite a 20% drop in sales to EUR 1.97m. Margins on
Performance Polymers (engineering thermoplastics) improved, despite 23%
lower sales. Polyurethanes margins receded on lower selling prices.
Profitability of the styrenics business, held separately and still up
for sale, improved.
