Solvay: Slump in primary markets hits Q3 sales and profits

Brussels ( -- Solvay has said that the effect of the economic crisis on the primary markets of its plastics business Ц automotive and construction, as well as electronics and electricity Ц led to sharp year-on-year falls in profits and sales in the sector in the third quarter of 2009. Operating profit (recurring EBIT) fell to EUR 39m from EUR 104m in the same period of 2008, while sales suffered a 16% year-on-year fall to EUR 827m.

The company said that demand had improved in recent months, a trend that had continued into the fourth quarter.
