Russian polystyrene market dropped by 16%

February 11/2010
MOSCOW (MRC) -- Estimated polystyrene consumption moved at 350 kt in Russia in 2009; that was 16% less compared to the previous year Ц reported in the MRC Annual Report.
Russian polystyrene market dropped by 16%

The ABS market lost nearly a third of the volume. EPS estimated consumption went down by 19%. HIPS and GPPS sales dropped by 13%.

Production held the major share in domestic polystyrene shipments, and it fell by 4% in 2009. HIPS and GPPS output dropped by 3%; at the same time, ABS output decreased two times. The 13% growth of EPS production was a positive fact.

Polystyrene and styrene plastics imports went down by 24% in 2009; whereas exports of that feedstock increased 30%. Exports growth trends referred to nearly all polystyrene types, apart from ABS (-49%). For example, exports of the leading export grade 825ES/Nizhnekamskneftekhim went up by 46%.

In view of decreased output of electronic household appliances (refrigerators Ц by 24.6%, TV-sets Ц by 23.6%), polystyrene consumption went down in that sector. Sales of the most popular grade Edistir ICE PDR 830D/Polimeri in the sector of refrigerators dropped by 38%.

The Common Customs Tariff came into effect on January 1, 2010, and import duties on basic polystyrene types were cut down to 0%. That act will change the market seriously. Polystyrene market development forecast, taking into account new duties, is presented in MRC Annual Reports.
