Ukrainian polypropylene market down 6%

February 11/2010
MOSCOW (MRC) -- In 2009, polypropylene consumption moved at 104 kt in the Ukrainian market, which was 6% less compared to the previous year according to the MRC Annual Report.
Ukrainian polypropylene market down 6%

Similarly to the Russian market, the Ukrainian polypropylene market incurred less losses because of the recession, compared to other markets.

Despite the increased domestic shipments from Lisichansk Refinery nearly 39 kt imports dropped by 13% at year-end. Particularly, there was a double drop in consumption of LyondellBasells polypropylene.

The decrease in consumption of European feedstock was partially covered by PP supplies from Nizhnekams and Budennovsk. The overall share of Russian material in imports went up from 8% in 2008 to 21% in 2009. It is worthwhile to mark out the share of pipe extrusion grades in imports; strangely enough, sales of those grades rocketed five times last year. Exports of Ukrainian polypropylene went up by 21% in 2009. Still, over 90% of exports go to Turkey and Russia.

The detailed information on developments in the Ukrainian polypropylene market in 2009, as well as market outlooks, can be found in our Annual Report Polypropylene in Ukraine 2010.
