Pipe-grade PP production has been resumed in Russia

September 23/2009
MOSCOW (MRC) -- Russian polypropylene producers resumed production of PP-random intended for pipes – MRC’s analysts reporting.

The needs of the Russian market have been met by material imported from Europe and South Korea.

There are two producers of PP-random intended for pipe extrusion: Tomskneftekhim’s with its 23007-30 grade and Nizhenkamskneftekhim with its PP4132B. Production of those grades was suspended in May and June, respectively.

In the absence of domestic material and strengthening demand Russian companies have to buy feedstock of European and Asian producers. Last year, overall imports of PP-random used to produce pipes moved at about 4.5 kt; over the eight months of this year, that figure has already exceeded 8 kt.

This year, the share of South Korean PP in overall imports has decreased seriously. Major consumption volumes still belong to Borealis’ RA130E grade. Demand for LyondellBasell’s pipe grade Hostalen PP H5416 has become much stronger this year as well. Sabic’s Vestolen P9421 has first appeared in the market.
