(ICIS) -- The IQPC Plastics Packaging South Africa conference opened on Tuesday, with the focus on sustainability and an aim to look at Africa as a whole, all the while examining challenges in Africa, said event chairman Patrick Munyembate. ⌠It's time for Africa, said Munyembate. ⌠There is an emerging middle class, not only in South Africa but also Nigeria, Tanzania and Kenya. Africa has 1.2bn people and is growing. Nigeria alone has 185m people. However, independent consultant Munyembate also outlined the concerns over development in South Africa and Africa.
⌠The lack of proper infrastructure is a huge concern, he said. ⌠There is also a lack of local high-grade raw material production. We often have to import from the Middle East, India and China.
Africa's local polyethylene (PE) production, for example, is concentrated in a few countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Libya. Another concern is the lack of technical skills, Munyembate added.
Perspectives of development of polymer markets, pricing issues and other important aspects will be discussed at The Polymers Summit-2011, which will be held in Moscow on November 30, 2011 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The Summit will be organized by MRC with the support of ICIS. The main idea of the Summit is to find a "the golden mean" between producers and converters. When producers receive exactly such margin of production, which helps them to invest in production expansion in order to substitute polymers imports, and the converters receive such price of feedstock that helps them to compete imported finished products. The Summit site gives an access to the live video of the Summit, speakers" presentations, as well as opportunities to ask questions or make appointments to any Summit partcipant.
