EPS imports to Ukraine increased by 80% in January

February 14/2014
MOSCOW (MRC) - Imports of expandable polystyrene (EPS) to Ukraine grew by 80% to 1,100 tonnes in January 2014, compared with January 2013, according to MRC ScanPlast.

Despite the seasonally weak demand in the market of finished products, Ukrainian converters increased purchases of imported EPS in January.
There were several factors, contributed to such a hike in EPS imports.
Firstly, Stirol did not produced EPS in January, and secondly, the local companies hurried to buy as much as much as possible in fear of hryvnya devaluation.

Considering rise in European EPS and euro, Ukrainian companies preferred to buy Russian material. Practically all imported in January EPS was delivered from Russia, with only 30 tonnes occurred for French EPS.

Market participants reported tight supply of Ukrainian EPS this week. A converter said, hryvnya weakened against the dollar and the euro made purchases in Russia and Europe more expensive than it was in the beginning of the year. Converters did EPS contracts in foreign markets in a foreign currency, so Ukrainian material can ease the converters" problems, the source added.

According to the MRC, Stirol will resume EPS production in February.
